Finally we get a look at the finish line from the horses perspective. This must be what the horses see. Not to many smiling faces...the welcoming committee!!
This is how I completed this picture. I went out on the track in the snow one day and took pictures back against the buildings. Then I went home and filled in the first row of people. After that, the other rows of people were not that hard. You can only see bits and pieces of them.
What makes a horse run so fast? Maybe the answer is the sight that the horse sees. Perhaps it is the jumping, screaming, cheering, hooping, hollaring, shirt-waving, antics of the humans in the stands. Hey, it could be. Anyway, here is my cartoon interpretation of that scene. Called "The Welcoming Committee", it looks more like an angry mob, not to many people smiling!
Over the 15 years that this print has been at Saratoga, people have studied this picture and smiled and laughed, AND have always seen someone else in the picture and not themselves! What's up with that?
This original sold through Saratoga Art Gallery in 1985.
