This original was completed in watercolors - over pen and ink stipple technique. Captures the struggle and concentration in a humorous fashion. Also available with Belmont at the bottom.
When I created this picture my idea was to have the horses coming right out at the viewer. I turned them a little so that we can see the bodies of the horses (straight on you would only see the fronts, would not capture the depth). This is one of my first cartoons where I added sneakers. The reason was to add more color to the picture. The idea was well received so from then on sneakers appear on all the horses in my pictures.
At one time, I used to travel to Belmont, Meadowlands, Monmouth, as well as, hunting and fishing sports shows. Because of the cost of making prints, I wanted to create a print that could be sold at Saratoga and also at Belmont. "At The Wire" was it. At the top it reads Saratoga. At the bottom it reads Belmont (in green) (cut off here). And wherever I was displaying I could cut off the name I did not need and my print would fit a standard 16 x 20 frame. As I started to display it, I would tell people about the print and the names at the top and bottom. What I found was that they did not want either name cut off because they had been to both places. So now I leave the names on as I hand out the prints and let the customer decide how they wish the picture to look. Large prints are currently out of stock. Matted 8 x 10 are available.
